Everyone six months old and older should get a flu vaccine.

There are three simple things parents can do to fight the flu

If you have young kids, it’s especially important to protect them from the flu virus because they have a greater chance of getting very sick.

The good news is that you can do a few simple things to reduce your family’s chances of catching the flu.

Tips for preventing the spread of the flu

1. Get flu shots for the whole family. Doctors recommend that anyone older than six months should get one. This includes pregnant women.

2. Wash your hands often and make sure your kids do, too. It can be hard to keep little hands clean, but it’s so important during flu season. Help your kids wash their hands with soap and water often, for at least 20 seconds.

3. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. To help prevent the spread of germs, use a tissue, your sleeve, or your elbow to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Avoid using your hands.

Flu shots are included, at no additional cost, with checkup exams. If you already had your checkup this year, call to schedule your flu shot; there will be no additional charge.

What to do if you think someone in your family has the flu

If think you or your children have the flu, make an appointment with your doctor. This is especially important for pregnant women, young children, and people over 65.

Symptoms of the flu include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Headaches
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

And finally, if your doctor says you have the flu, take your medication and stay home! People are usually contagious for 24 hours after a fever is gone.
