Dr. Tiana Hughes understands that a great pediatrician does more than just diagnose an illness and prescribe treatment. A pediatrician is also an important partner who can help families navigate the challenges of raising children.
“I believe it’s very important to really explain to parents any conditions their child may have and to answer questions so that they understand it. I take the time to break it down for them and they really appreciate it.”
It is a quality that patients and colleagues alike appreciate.
“Dr. Hughes brings great energy to our pediatric team,” says Dr. Juan Olivares, director of pediatrics at Vecino’s Airline Children’s Clinic. “Her patients are lucky to have her.”

Drawn to medicine as a sixth grader in Oakland, California
“I was in the sixth grade the first time I told anyone I wanted to be a pediatrician,” says Dr. Hughes. “I was always the cousin babysitting the younger cousins, and I loved being with babies.”
At the time, one of her aunts was in medical school to become a doctor herself. “I was drawn to her books and the pictures,” she says of watching her aunt study. “Seeing her go through the process really sparked something for me.”
This upbringing is a large part of why Dr. Hughes chose to join a community clinic like Vecino’s Airline Children’s Clinic, where she has been on the pediatric team since 2015.
“It’s rewarding to help families get connected with resources they didn’t know about or give them information they didn’t even know they could get from me,” she says. “Because I grew up in a similar community, people don’t always have to explain to me what they need. I get it.”
